Tai 3 Rear Storage Box and Accessory Checks

A rear-mounted box on a Tai 3 should be inspected as equipment, not assumed to be a spare-wheel carrier, recovery attachment or universal load platform. Establish what the specific assembly is designed to hold and whether it is original or aftermarket. Its condition can affect practical access and ownership even when the vehicle drives correctly. Start with identification before opening negotiations over accessory value.

Describe the exact assembly being sold

Ask for photographs from the side, rear and mounting area, together with product identification and instructions where available. List the box, brackets, locks, keys and internal fittings separately. A seller may use a casual term such as backpack for several different arrangements. Do not infer capacity or permitted loading from that name. If an accessory has no traceable manufacturer or installation record, keep its suitability unresolved until a competent specialist can assess it for the intended vehicle and use. A rear box and its contents also belong in the passenger and accessory weight assessment.

Inspect fastening without inventing a strength test

Check accessible fasteners, mounting points and surrounding bodywork for looseness, cracks, corrosion or evidence of previous repair. Do not stand on the assembly or pull it with another vehicle to test it. Visible brackets do not establish a recovery rating. Ask the inspector to explain whether observed movement is normal for that assembly and what corrective work is needed. A re-tightened fastener is not a sufficient repair record when the mounting panel itself may have been damaged.

Check normal access and load management

Open and close the equipment according to its instructions, checking latch engagement, key operation and interference with the vehicle. Establish the permitted content and load, including any restrictions on liquids, heat-sensitive items or unsecured objects. External storage is not a reason to exceed the vehicle’s payload. Place frequently needed items where they remain accessible during a stop, and do not store emergency equipment behind other luggage that prevents normal access when the vehicle is fully packed.

Look for water and dust evidence

Inspect seals, joints and internal surfaces for trapped moisture, residue, corrosion and damaged lining. A dry inspection immediately after cleaning cannot establish long-term sealing. Ask about previous water entry and repairs, without subjecting the vehicle to pressure or immersion outside the manufacturer guidance. Extend suspicious findings into the water-ingress and recovery-history assessment. Exterior box moisture and cabin flooding are different findings; neither should be used to dismiss or invent the other.

Keep visibility, lights and sensors unobstructed

Check whether the installed assembly obstructs registration plates, required lights, rear visibility or sensor fields. Destination requirements may differ and should be assessed locally. A parking display without a warning is not proof that an accessory cannot affect sensing. If the arrangement has been changed, obtain appropriate technical advice before relying on driver assistance. Do not promise that every original or aftermarket box is legal everywhere merely because it was present when the car was registered in China.

Agree removal and shipping responsibilities

Ask the carrier whether the assembly stays on the vehicle and whether dimensions or loose contents require declaration. Photograph condition before collection and list detachable parts in the shipping and EV handover file. If removal is proposed, establish who performs it, how mounting points are protected and who reinstalls it correctly. Avoid sending loose brackets and unidentified bolts in the cabin. The buyer should know whether the final offer includes installation at destination or delivery of parts only.

Decide whether the accessory improves the purchase

Separate the price of the underlying vehicle from the value of usable, complete accessories. Missing keys, damaged seals or uncertain mounting can turn an attractive feature into immediate work. A buyer carrying ordinary luggage may prefer an unmodified vehicle with known internal storage. A buyer who needs the box should require applicable instructions and acceptable condition. Record unresolved limits in the quotation rather than allowing an accessory photograph to imply more carrying capacity or capability than has been demonstrated.

Example: the box arrives without its key

Compare the delivery manifest with the departure photographs and establish whether the key was included, shipped separately or omitted from the original sale. Resolve access through the legitimate supplier rather than forcing the lock. The accessory should have been valued as a complete assembly; its usability and replacement cost are distinct from whether the vehicle itself was delivered in working order.

Buyer checklist

  • Identify the assembly and included fittings.
  • Inspect mounts, latches, seals and keys.
  • Verify load instructions and visibility constraints.
  • Record carrier handling and arrival inventory.

Questions and answers

Is the rear box a recovery or towing point?

Do not assume so. Its intended use and rating must come from applicable documentation; appearance and mounting size are not proof.

Can I count external storage outside the payload limit?

No. Carried equipment and contents still affect the vehicle’s loading. Apply all relevant vehicle and accessory limits together.

Reference information

Use the applicable market and year documentation for equipment and operating limits. The references have their own market and publication scope; they do not establish the condition, fitted equipment or destination approval of an individual vehicle.
