Plan Tai 3 Passenger and Accessory Loads Before a Journey

Useful storage volume is not a payload allowance. A Tai 3 carrying passengers, luggage, fitted accessories and portable equipment needs a weight plan as well as a fit test. Use the selected vehicle’s records and labels, and verify any equipment-specific limits before the load becomes part of your purchase decision.

Start with the exact vehicle’s limits

Identify the production edition and obtain its applicable vehicle records, owner instructions and readable load information. Confirm permitted total mass, axle constraints and any equipment limits through competent support where the record is unclear. Do not copy a payload number from another drivetrain or a different market. A vehicle’s quoted empty or kerb mass may use a particular measurement convention; establish what it includes before subtraction. This guide gives no universal Tai 3 weight allowance because the exact configuration and governing records must decide.

Inventory everything that will be carried

List the intended occupants, their realistic combined weight, luggage, charging cables, tools, portable equipment and fitted additions. Record what is already included in the documented vehicle mass so an accessory is not counted twice or omitted. Keep estimates labelled and weigh uncertain items where practical. A five-seat cabin does not establish that every combination of five occupants and heavy gear is permitted. The largest items may fit while the total load remains unsuitable. Update the list when the journey, occupants or accessories change.

Use weighing when the accounting boundary is unclear

Ask a competent operator about weighing the vehicle in a representative loaded configuration and, where needed, measuring axle loads. Record the occupants, equipment, charge-independent assumptions relevant to the mass record and what was present during the measurement. Compare results with the vehicle-specific limits through qualified advice. A guessed allowance based on a sales brochure cannot resolve a marginal case. Keep scales, date and conditions in the file, and do not treat a single unrepresentative empty measurement as approval for every later trip.

Treat roof equipment as its own constrained system

Confirm the allowed use of fitted roof hardware and any proposed carrier. The roof and drone-edition guide keeps factory systems separate from later additions. A roof carrier’s rating does not automatically establish the vehicle roof’s permitted load, and neither replaces the vehicle’s overall limits. Include the carrier and attachments where the applicable instruction requires them to be counted. Do not assume a large storage item is safe merely because it fits between rails or because another Tai 3 owner has used something similar.

Consider rear accessories and load distribution

A rear box, its mounting hardware and contents change the configuration being assessed. Review the rear storage-box checks for fit and mounting questions, then include the accepted equipment in the weight plan. Total mass alone does not demonstrate acceptable axle loading or balance. If a trailer is proposed, use the vehicle and towbar approval route rather than assuming a box mount provides towing approval. Record the actual arrangement and obtain competent guidance when the consequences are uncertain.

Keep tyre capacity and restraint separate from available space

Check the fitted tyre specification, pressure instruction and condition through the tyre and wheel assessment. A suitable tyre rating does not increase the vehicle’s permitted mass, and TPMS cannot replace the load plan. Secure heavy equipment under the applicable instructions and preserve safe access, visibility and passenger restraint use. Do not store an unsecured tool box where it can strike occupants. Inspect accepted mounting points and use appropriate hardware; improvised straps or a visually neat arrangement are not proof of safe retention.

Run a realistic family-and-equipment scenario

Suppose the buyer plans five occupants, a cooler, luggage, camping equipment and an external box. First verify that the items physically fit, then build the complete mass inventory and assess distribution against the actual limits. If a measurement is close to a boundary, reduce the load, reconfigure it within approved limits or obtain a competent weighing assessment. Do not quietly remove an occupant or accessory from the test and then advertise the full arrangement as accepted. Photograph the final configuration and record the limitations the driver must retain.

Make the load plan part of the ownership brief

Keep accepted passengers, equipment, measurements and restrictions with the buyer’s vehicle file. At arrival, check that the delivered accessories and tyres match the assessed configuration. Revisit the plan before a different trip or equipment installation; the old conclusion does not approve a new arrangement. Include service and local parts capability when repeated loaded use is expected. A sound plan can support a city, family or light-trail mission, but it cannot turn styling, cargo volume or AWD into an exemption from the applicable vehicle and equipment limits.

Buyer checklist

  • Vehicle-specific mass and axle records obtained
  • Passengers and equipment inventoried
  • Accessory accounting boundary clear
  • Roof and rear limits reviewed separately
  • Tyres and restraints appropriate
  • Representative loading assessed and recorded

Buyer questions

Does a larger boot mean more permitted payload?

No. Volume, total permitted mass, axle loading and equipment limits answer different questions.

Can a higher-rated tyre increase the vehicle’s payload?

No. Verify tyre suitability without treating it as a change to the vehicle’s approved mass limits.
