Identify the vehicle and approved discharge equipment
Request the applicable operating instructions and the identification of the supplied V2L device. Confirm that the function is present and usable on the selected version, rather than a future update or equipment shown on another trim. The Tai 3 specification review should establish this before the accessory is priced. Inspect plugs, cables, protective features and labels. Do not substitute an unverified adapter solely because it physically fits the inlet, and do not treat a demonstration without equipment identification as full acceptance.
List appliances by operating and starting demand
Write down each appliance’s rated input and any relevant starting demand, together with how long it will operate. A fridge that cycles differs from a heater drawing continuously, while some motors need a brief higher starting load. The combined demand must remain within all applicable vehicle and equipment limits. Ask a qualified person to review unfamiliar loads. Never assume that a multi-socket strip increases available power or that the car will safely accommodate every combination until it shuts down.
Calculate energy separately from power
Power is the instantaneous demand; energy depends on demand over time. As a simple planning example, a 100 W load running for five hours uses 0.5 kWh before conversion losses. That example is not a Tai 3 operating specification. Include losses and realistic operating time without pretending the entire traction battery is available for camping. Set an appropriate reserve using the manufacturer’s supported controls and preserve enough energy for the return route and a charging contingency.
Keep the setup within safe portable use
Follow the vehicle and accessory instructions for location, ventilation, weather protection and cable handling. Keep equipment away from water, traffic paths and children, and stop if there is damage, overheating or a warning. Do not connect V2L to household circuits through an ordinary socket or create a backfeed arrangement. Any fixed-installation integration requires an approved system and qualified design. This guide is for purchase and trip planning, not a wiring procedure or a substitute for local electrical requirements.
Plan the campsite as part of the driving route
Estimate the drive to the site, local movement, overnight consumption and travel to the next dependable charger. Poor road conditions and weather can change the energy margin. Use the version and range guide for the wider driving context. A campsite with a socket may still lack a safe, approved vehicle-charging supply. Do not assume V2L can solve a charging shortage: discharging the car powers equipment but reduces the energy remaining for travel.
Demonstrate normal start, use and stop
Before export, request a controlled test with an identified, suitable load and qualified supervision where necessary. Record the start setting, operating behaviour, warnings and normal shutdown. A successful small-load test does not certify every appliance on the buyer’s list. At destination, repeat a modest test with the actual compatible equipment before a remote trip. Keep the instructions accessible offline, and confirm that discharge equipment is included in the packing list rather than merely shown in promotional photos.
Decide what belongs in the vehicle purchase
Separate the value of built-in capability from the cost of adapters, protective equipment and destination-compatible appliances. A buyer who only charges phones has a different requirement from one expecting overnight climate equipment. If the safe operating limits cannot cover an essential load, change the plan rather than asking for an unofficial power increase. Retain documentation so a future owner understands which accessories are approved and what was actually tested, without interpreting a camping photograph as evidence of unlimited capability.
Example: the camp kitchen needs several appliances
A kettle, refrigerator and other equipment may exceed the supported combination even when each seems modest by itself. Have the proposed loads reviewed and decide which can operate separately under the instructions. Calculate energy for the evening and the morning departure. If the essential appliances cannot be supported safely, revise the camping arrangement rather than relying on protective shutdown as the operating plan.
Buyer checklist
- Verify the fitted function and compatible discharge device.
- List simultaneous and starting appliance loads.
- Reserve energy for travel and a charging contingency.
- Use only supported portable arrangements; never backfeed.
Questions and answers
Is V2L rated power the same as charging power?
No. They describe different functions. Obtain the applicable discharge limits for the selected vehicle and equipment.
Can V2L power a house through an ordinary wall socket?
No. Do not create a backfeed connection. Fixed-installation use needs an approved arrangement designed and installed by qualified professionals.
